Military Classic Beats Randall Number 1
By T. Hsu
As the owner of this Cold Steel Military Classic model and numerous other Cold Steel knives, swords, axes, and machetes and three Randall knives, two Number 1 models and a Number 14, I'm in a position to give an informed assessment of these blades. The Randall knives are very well made with excellent sheaths. They are extremely expensive and the waiting period to get one is very long. I bought mine over thirty years ago when they were less than $200 each. My Cold Steel Military Classic was purchased recently and is just as well made, although it's stainless steel guard is not soldered to the blade as the Randall's are. The Randall Number 1 has a brass guard which tarnishes very easily and if not kept polished, will stain it's sheath with sticky green gunk. However, most important of all, the blade steel of the Cold Steel is vastly superior to that of the Randall. To test the two knives against each other, I made up a couple hundred strips of cardboard approx. 12" long by 2" wide. Starting with both my Cold Steel Military classic and my Randall Number 1 with 6" blade and red Micarta handle fully sharpened to hair shaving keeness, I began cutting each cardboard strip into ten pieces, alternating knives until one became too dull to clean cleanly. My Randall failed first. I re-sharpened the Randall, but left the Cold Steel as is, and continued to whittle the cardboard strips. The Randall dulled again after a while, but the Cold Steel continued to slice like a razor. I re-sharpened my Randall again and continued. When the Randall dulled a third time, I terminated the test. The Cold Steel was still cutting cleanly, but not quite as well as at the beginning of my test. A few light strokes against a Buck steel made the Military Classic razor sharp again. If you want a superior working knife at a reasonable price, get a Cold Steel and forget the Randall unless you just want to collect them. I see no reason to spend over twice the money to get a Randall Number 1 which can't stay 1/3 as sharp as the Cold Steel Military Classic. I have also tried to order replacement sheaths from Randall and was informed they will not sell them. I also asked to have the leather handle of my 7" Randall Number 1 replaced with one of black or red Micarta and was told they are too busy to do so and will only replace the handle if it was damaged and the wait would be several years. By the way, I have no personal connection with Cold Steel nor any of it's employees.

Excellent!
By J. Alphin
The Cold Steel Military Classic R1 is a contracted Japanese made copy of the famous Randall Model 1-7, one of the finest classic military knives ever made. Nothing is spared in this Cold Steel example. The Randall 1-7 comes with a 5 year wait and a hefty price-tag. Cold Steel's version is a serious amount of quality for the price. The sheath is of genuine cowhide and has a pouch containing a hard Arkansas stone, just like the Randall Model 1's. If you are looking a quality Randall style knife and cannot afford the real thing (or don't feel like the half a decade wait), this knife is a sound buy.Cold Steel also makes a low cost hard rubber trainer for this knife.

Broken hearted
By Gerard P. Siersema
I am really bummed out because for a long time this was my favorite knife. I dropped it and the blade broke right at the handle. I sent it in to Cold Steel and they responded that they would not fix or replace it. They did offer to sell me another knife of my choice at 30% off of MSRP which was kind of an insult considering even with their discount Amazon beat their prices. I was a huge Cold Steel fan and own bunch of their products. It really bummed me out to discover how poorly they stood behind my favorite knife and what to expect if any of my other cold steel products fail. Honestly, it saddens me that I cannot buy Cold Steel again with confidence that they back all the products that I want to buy. My other cold steel products like my Kukri, tomahawks, and machetes have all held up well.
