best adjustable wrench / multitool I've ever owned
By Jon Hinman
The title says multi-tool because these things have soooo much gripping force they can be used for many other tasks besides turning a nut or bolt. I've used mine to crush the edge of pennies; yes, they can do that! You can also crimp wire with them, both regular copper wire, and I've also crimped 1/8 steel cable with them, then yanked the cable after doing so (it was a very strong crimp). They will hold anything incredibly tight, and are very accurate even for holding smaller parts. Bending wire or anything at a sharp 90 degree angle can be easily accomplished. The jaws are flat, so they generally will not mark up something unless you really squeeze. To use them as a wrench is also like a dream... for working on a bicycle, these are incredible, they open so wide for their size and weight, and they are quickly adjusted to any bolt on the thing. Of course where a normal wrench would slip, these NEVER do, because there is constant pressure on the gripping section. I've also used these to squeeze rivets and grommets, which they work well for. The BEST thing about this tool, is that it's noticeably light for the size it opens to, and after some use allows so much control that it feels like an extension of your hand. The jaws are kind of in the shape of a beak, so when using this tool, it basically turns your hand into an adjustable power-beak that can be used for tightening, loosening, straitening, squeezing, crimping, and flattening.

Wow!

What a beautiful tool! This is one of those tools you want to use so much that you go looking for things to grip and turn. Much more refined than a vise-grip and more precise than a crescent wrench. It's beautifully finished and machined. This tool is actually 185mm (7.5") long. You adjust the position of the upper handle by pressing the joint rivet (it's actually a button) to allow the top lever to slide up and down the toothed rack. When you let go of the joint rivet, the top handle locks into place. On this model there are 13 adjustment positions and it opens to a maximum of 35 mm (1.25"). Adjusting the tool to the desired position is a little cumbersome, it takes 2-3 tries to slide it to the position you want. It take two hands to adjust the tool and you have to remove the tool from the work to adjust it.I love the way the jaws stay parallel to each other no matter what adjustment position the tool is in. The joint rivet is on a spring lock, if you don't press the button, the tool won't adjust. This is a good thing - you can drop and shake the tool all day and it won't change positions accidentally. There are two types of grips, "plastic coated" and "multi-component". These are the multi-component grips and they look more comfortable then the coated grips. The multi-component Knipex part numbers are 8605150 (150mm long, opens to 27mm/1", 14 adjustment positions), 8605180 (this model), and 8605250 (250mm long, opens to 46mm/1.75", 17 adjustment positions). The grips feel a little greasy to me, if they get a little oil/water on them, your hand slides a bit. I prefer Whia's soft grip finish which feels more sure.Go to Knipex website and download their catalog, it's a work of art. This tool is on page 95. There's lots of useful info in the catalog even if you don't own/buy the tools. This is a "must have" tool!

Awesome gripping power, takes a bit to readjust jaws
By carbon
This tool has the most gripping power of any pliers of its size I have ever seen. They've got some magic pivot working here. I was nonplussed until I tried it.The jaws are smooth, so they don't mess up your work. Since the amount of gripping force is so high, like 11:1, you don't need serrations anyway. The only thing that bugs me is that the amount of opening diameter of each "click" is rather small; I imagine this is a result of the physics of the tool's huge gripping force (like a pulley - the jaws move relatively little for the same sized hand movement compared to a regular pliers, but it "lifts" more "weight"). So, when you are working with different sized material, sometimes it takes messing with a few different settings in order to get the right one (not too big or too small). A bit like the problems of an adjustable pliers, only magnified. More gripping power, less adjustment per click.A big plus: the pliers works as a spanner (open-ended wrench), and it'll work like a ratchet if you relax your grip on a nut and rotate it. Pretty neat. It's narrow, so I can get into tight slots.Due to the reason mentioned in the 2nd paragraph above, I find it doesn't wholly replace a regular adjustable pliers or vise-grip, but it sure comes close. And if you really need the Hand of the Gods to grab something, this wrench wins hands down.
