By Charles J. Schwartz
I bought this pump to drain water out of my backyard which turns into a pool after very heavy rains and quick snow thaws. First, I bought this unit with the extra long 25' cord for convenience. The same unit with an 8' cord would have saved me $20 but in my case it was worth it. Second, this pump works great with a regular garden hose but using the recommended 1 1/4", I'm sure, would be much quicker and efficient but I haven't tried that yet. In my case I found the lowest spot in the yard (approx 50'x90') and dug a hole about 12 inches deep by about 12 inches wide and simply submerged the entire unit into the hole and plugged it in. Some posts have recommended putting the unit into a 5 gallon bucket with multiple holes but it worked fine by simply submerging it right into the hole. I need a 50' hose so there's no way I'm going to get the advertised 40 GPM that's advertised but I knew that before I started. Not sure of the GPM I get but it's pretty much like turning a garden hose on, not quite, full blast. Plus, unless you are 20-30 feet of the operating unit, you wouldn't even hear it. Just a slight humming sound. Got the water level down to very close to the advertised 1/8", but realistically probably more like 1/4". I didn't have a perfectly flat (smooth) surface so that's not verified. The debris screen on the bottom is made of plastic so a little extra care is recommended to avoid a break. ***You DO have to "babysit" this pump while it's in use (no on/off switch) or you run the risk of overheating.*** The 3 year warranty also influenced my decision. Although the test of time is still in question I have no reason to believe this pump wouldn't last for a long time.*** This is the first utility pump I have ever used and even I was able to operate it right out of the box. EASY TO USE, WORKS AS ADVERTISED and it will remove unwanted water. I'm confident about this purchase.UPDATE 9/27/11: THIS PUMP IS AWESOME! Forget the garden hose. Buy yourself 50-100 ft. of 1 1/2" utility hose (the ad says 1 1/4" but it's actually 1 1/2") and, with this pump, whatever water you have to move WILL BE GONE. GUARANTEED!! Since I've purchased this pump I've used it many times to drain water out of my back yard after heavy rains and it works like a charm. FAST DISCHARGE & POWERFUL. THANKS SUPERIOR!!! I almost, that's almost, wish I needed another one.

The web page states "this utility pump can whisk away water to 1/8 of an inch from the floor" The manual on the unit I received states it must be in at least 1" of water to operate. The unit I received has stand off legs that are longer than 1/8" thus it would draw air before getting near 1/8".This may be a web page error or a design change since the web page was written. In either case, I need a pump that will operate in far less than 1" of water.

Have used this regularly for 8 months to pump dirty water from yard (when it floods) and also to pump pool backwash water from a holding tank for irrigation. The pump is heavy and quickly sinks to the bottom but has a small removable grill on the bottom that prevents trash from entering pump. It even pumps muddy water mixed with sludgy diatomaceous earth (DE powder) at the bottom of the tank out through 165 feet of garden hose with enough force to keep you constantly busy irrigating. An unexpected bonus is the pump keeps "pumping" with about 1/2 force even after it is unplugged. In other words, the water doesn't drain backwards but keeps on discharging out of the hose. This is going over the top of the tank, about a four foot rise straight up. If you walk away and come back later, the tank is completely drained to the last 1/8 inch. The first time this happened I was shocked and checked the tank for leaks but none found. It has worked every time I use the pump and continues to amaze and delight me.I like this "feature" very much as you don't risk running the pump dry trying to get the last bit of mud and water out of the tank. Talk about a "green" pump! No electricity needed after it is "primed" by plugging in to power for a minute or two (to clear all the air bubbles out of the hose). Will continue to draw and push (pull?) water through the hose, unattended, forever (due to the "capillary" effect.)Highly recommended for pumping dirty water and for "unattended" irrigation operations - and saving electricy!
