5Tips for Beginners (like me)
By J. Preston
I bought these on a whim as a Christmas present for myself.I bought them, and the following items (on Amazon), to make my own package (this saved me about $45.00 over package prices on the internet (especially with Amazon's prime shipping)):Rottefella T4 NIS Touring Ski BindingAlpina T10 Nordic Cross-Country Ski Boots for NNN BindingsAlpina ASC-BC Back-Country Nordic Cross-Country Ski PolesThese skis have a relatively new (1994) system, called NIS (Nordic Integrated System), so that you can assemble your own skis right out of the box. You don't need a shop to install the bindings. When you get the bindings, you just slip them over a plate, which is fastened at the factory, to the skis. They are very secure and you don't need tools (although it takes some muscle as it's a tight fit).I was skiing within a few hours of UPS delivering all of the packages. The skis themselves are remarkably light weight. I don't have an exact weight, but, both skis together barely weigh more than a pound. They are manufactured in the Czech Republic. The manufacturing quality is notably better than most Chinese manufactured items. The NNN bindings are amazingly effective in transferring power and control from your legs to the skis. It is obvious that the science of skiing has progressed significantly since I gave up Alpine skiing fifteen years ago. I've had no problems making the transition from alpine to nordic with the package. You probably won't need wax for these skis. However, in between tune ups (edge sharpening, etc.) you might use a spray wax to ease your track. Hertel "Liquid Super Hot Sauce" All Temperature Ski and Snowboard Wax, 2 oz bottle. When you order poles here is a good rule of thumb for choosing your proper length of pole for cross-country skiing: First, stand on a hard floor in stocking feet; second, measure up, from the floor, to about the middle of your bicep. Take your reading in centimeters (not inches). That will give you the correct length of pole, in centimeters, for cross-country skiing. If in doubt, order a pole the next size up - they come in 5cm increments. Better to have a pole a few centimeters long, than a few centimeters short. When you order your boots, I would order a size up. I usually take a U.S. size 10D. I ordered a European size 44 (sizing and charts abound on Amazon listings for ski boots). A European size 44 fits size 10.5 to 11. The boots were a very comfortable fit right out of the box. Assuming they will stretch, at least a little, as I use them, they will accomodate several layers of socks. I highly recommend either two layers of alpaca socks Extreme Alpaca Socks - 10-13, or, an inner layer of "polypro" socks Fox River Mills 4478-1000M Alturas Polypro Liner Sock White Medium, and, an outer layer of alpaca. (Alpaca is (no exaggeration) five to seven times warmer than wool (and much, much lighter)). Alpaca fibers have tiny air sacs in them which give them unparalleled insulation properties, light weight, moisture control, and, they are completely hypo-allergenic) (Alpacas are also really cute little critters. Here I Am!: Alpacas In America)My Grandmother (rest her soul) came to America in the 1880's, from Austria, as a six-year old child (on a ship under sail no less). She used to say: "If your feet are cold, put on a scarf and hat." When we were kids, we thought we knew everything so we didn't pay much attention to her. Now, many years later, it is amazing how much she has learned in the ensuing years. Wrap the back of your head and neck with a scarf, and, wear a warm hat. Or use a "Mad Bomber Hat". Mad Bomber® Rabbit Fur Hat It will keep your feet (and your head and neck) ten times warmer than 1,000 layers of socks (or a hat that only covers the top of your head). (When the back of your neck and head are cold, sensing impending hypothermia, the body starts shutting down blood flow to the extremities, and, the feet are the first to experience diminished blood flow (the hands are next)).Carry water with you. If you are skiing properly you will perspire (or "glow" if you happen to be a woman) and you will need to sip water to replenish your systemic fluids. This will help keep your metabolism in a state that is most conducive to enjoyable exercise. Make sure you strech and warm up before you start skiing. This is the easiest way to improve stamina, and, prevent injury. (Qigong is an excellent mental and physical warmup for skiing. Qigong Beginning Practice)I quit alpine skiing about fifteen years ago. I used to ski downhill everyday. I easily have 10,000 to 15,000 miles of vertical skiing. I used to live for it (mostly the adrenaline and the fresh air). I quit when snowboarding became popular. (I have nothing against snowboarders - just against crowded mountains). My idea of "skiing" is a GS tour down a mountain at about 30 - 35 mph. When they started recommending that skiers wear crash helmets (because of snowboarders), it was time for me surrender my beloved mountain skiing. However, my doctor recently recommended more aerobic exercise regiments, and, there are few exercises more suitable for health and fitness than cross-country skiing. I hope you enjoy this review. I am skiing again!!!!!!
