5Bi-polar fun
By Charles Sieracki
Have lived with 2 of these speakers for a month. I wanted a separate two channel rig to play CD's separate from my home theater. I know many folks will want to use these speakers in that context, but this sort of set up will reveal any flaws inherent in the speakers themselves alone, not a complex of surrounds, subs and other factors.Unpacking and delivery. OMG. These boxes are huge. The delivery guys are really struggling bringing them in the door. If you plan to move these yourself you had better be capable and have a strong back. The boxes are literally nine feet long and are at least 150 lbs each. Unpacking them required a bit of time. They are doble boxed, so there is a lot of speaker box remaining. The best strategy is to open the bottom end first, peel away the plastic from that, and them tip the box upright. Then, carefully split the seam on the sides, enabling you to unwrap them. Be careful as there is highly finished wood on the top and bottom, and the speaker itself is wrapped in a fabric, if damaged, will not be replaceable or removable that I can see.Setup and first sound tests. After connecting audio quest cables with UST plugs to the speakers binding posts, and taking care of all the other connections necessary, I began to play with these speakers. I started with a CD I've used for years that is quite demanding, but I've heard it on many systems. All I wanted to do was make sure these were working and undamaged at this point. They passed that OK. They are unspiked at this point and they are not even positioned with any care at all. The sound was quite good out of the box, but I've heard better. I found that I had the subs turned way up on one and down on the other. After I corrected a minor connection issue and turned the sub level to 1 o'clock on both, I could then hear something quite different with the same recording. Wow. Quite nice initial bite on the treble that I really liked and I am a bass guy. I heard a clarity that I've not heard before. As the days pass, I give these speakers a REAL workout. Some organ music, quite demanding on bass, was tried. The subs struggled a bit with this. This CD is actually the most demanding I own. I managed to shake the house but I can't say that it sounded like a real organ. I had to turn down the volume a bit as I was hearing some real deep passages from the speakers being stressed out. I was concerned at this point.Initial impressions. These are clearly full range speakers but they have their limitations. I backed off playinig very demanding bass CD's and went to more mainstream orchestral and piano CD's. I realized that there is a break in period on these speakers. Not fair to pass judgement on them right out of the box. So I decided to loosen them up a bit first. This was a good thing as I can hear some improvement versus what I heard before that made me a bit concerned. My concernes related to a very subtile rattle from one sub during a very low loud passage. I was not sure if it was room resonance or a bad sub. I tried other CD's and did not hear it. I now think it may have been a cabinet resonance instead of a bad sub.Further impressions. Two weeks to one month of listening. yes I can say these are loosening up a bit. Seems to play things more effortlessly now. I am playing other organ CD's and it is really nice, no issues. Sounds quite real. I can't say that I'd mistake it for the real thing on closing my eyes. I think that is impossible. I've now tried a wide variety of instumental, vocal and electronic music. I'm pretty happy overall. I was really expecting a speaker that was weighted toward the bass, but these really have a strong treble too, which surprised me. I stressed the speakers out at one point, causing my amp to overheat and shut down so I am in no way baby-ing these at all. I would say these are great choices for music systems like I have created. They would also shine in the home theater context, assuming you have room for them in the correct position. All in all, greatly musical. The subs are not unflappable. I am considering aux subs to handle the deepest tones. I would keep these subs turned down about half way, as fully up makes them really overbearing and unmusical. The highs and midranges are quite nice. In fact, vocal music, piano, sound great. Being bi-polar, there is no real soundstage as in "normal" speakers. This is more diffuse, more floating sort of sound. Some will like it, others might not. If you are expecting a very coherent presentation, this is not it. If you enjoy a more "surround" feeling, like you are floating in the sound, then these will be your thing. By the way, fit and finish are excellent.

5BP7000SC - Awesome...
By CRH
As there are no local retailers to demo the Def Tech BP7000SC super towers, I took a flier on selecting them based on the superb performance of my previous Def Tech purchases of the Super Cube II and the 6.5" outdoor speakers along with the all the positive feedback and reviews. As I'm not one to take this kind of risk, I was a bit nervous of what to expect when they arrived...But when they did, I was in complete amazement... popped in a variety of music genres from classical, progressive jazz/funk, new age, classic rock, alternative rock, mellow rock that contains good vocal parameters, and some R&B. Took some time to fiddled with the subwoofer volume to get the blend to my preference then just sat back and just smiled...What a beautiful sounding pair of speakers - full, open, airy, detailed, and pack a good punch when required. After that musical audio check, flipped to a movie to check the surround sound and was equally blown away by what a difference they made... I certainly was not expecting this incredible difference in the surround sound of movies (as thought I had decent speakers for that before...)Then... I disconnected the old speaker set-up and hooked up the new Def Tech CS8080HD center and the SR8080BP surrounds with the BP7000SC's and WHAMO - the full expanse of the theater experience is now in my family room... I was impressed before, but now, I am BLOWN AWAY...This set up is perfect, simply superb audio performance for musical enjoyment plus stupendous thundering home theater.Highly recommend to anyone!

5WOW!!
By C. Brown
Like a previous reviewer described, these speakers are heavy and large. The trick in onloading these speakers is to do it slow and from the bottom of the box. I unloaded mine alone! Also I wanted the cherry bottom and top end caps so I had to remove the black caps and put the cherry ones on. The top caps are no problem but installing the bottoms are a challenge. I installed mine while taking them out the box (since I took them out bottom first). I bought the forearm straps they sell for lifting heavy furniture to assist me moving them. Moving these just a couple feet is no easy task but I was able to get these 150lb mammoths in their stereo position around my tv. I have a Yamaha RXV 1700 I got on Amazon for a great deal and it drives these speakers fine. I thought I would have to buy separates when I got these speakers because they rate up to 1,000 watts for driving power but my RXV 1700 is all I need. The sensitivity on these speakers is great so I can play them with very little power and still get awesome sound. Don't get me wrong these things can handle a lot of watts if you throw it their way. With regard to sound quality; the highs on these things (tweeters) are sweet. The more I play them the sweeter the tweeters sound. The mids are very nice and I can now hear nuances in music I never heard before. Voices are clearer and more natural sounding. The bass is tight and sharp. I still added a sub to get that really low bass that hits you in the guts. Overall this is the best sounding speaker I have listened to for both music and movies. My entire system is made up of Definitive Technolgy speakers and I am very pleased with their product. In fact, I only buy Def Tech speakers for my loudspeaker needs.
