By Bruce Felix
We have used Standard Horizon radios for over 10 years on 2 research vessels, starting with the HX255, with which we were very happy. We then switched to the 350S and found them very suitable as well. Unfortunately, with the HX370, there is a weak point in the transmit amplifier and it burns out regularly. I purchased 30 of these radios 2 years ago and have sent ALL of them back at least once for warranty repair. While I can't complain about the service because they have promptly repaired them and sent them back, they have done nothing to correct the problem. So I receive them, they get used and 4 to 6 months later they fail again. Big Hassle. I would not recommend this radio due to this issue. If you do have one you can turn down the transmit power and possibly avoid this problem, BUT why get a 5W radio if you can only use ~3W?

Need a special screw in cord to connect to your computer. Then you can download free software to clone and program HAM channels. Luckily I had a friend at the local ARRL club that could do this for me.The product I got was very simple to use with only a few buttons. You need to read the manual to know special tricks that pressing 2 buttons does. Very happy with my purchase so far.

By N2HP
This is a great commercial quality Marine VHF Portable. It is easy to program from the manual provided. It is easy to program selected channels for scanning with a weather alert option. There are 55 pre-programmed marine channels and space for 40 additional channels which can be programmed for Amateur, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and "MURS" Frequencies, with authorization programming equipment. It does not appear to be programmable for tone encoding. It is submersible(can get wet), but is not "waterproof". Package includes a chargeable battery, a dry cell pack, belt clip and a drop-in charger. Power output is 5 watts on high power and it can be connected to an external mike and antenna. The cell phone type belt clip is to flimsy for carrying the radio on board a vessel where the wearer is bouncing around and focused on boat handling operations. I substituted a clip made to replace the flimsy clip of the Yaesu-Vertex VX amateur handheld portable series. It works great. This radio are no longer being produced but can still be purchased new on the web. It's well worth the low price. Delivery from Amazon was so fast it blew my remaining hair back.
