By ams
They used these at the hospital where I was being treated for head pain. They are large bags that can be filled with ice cubes with plastic lining interior and a thin soft exterior with a clamp on one end and ties on both ends that can be used to secure the bag to your body. I had tried ice before for my head pain but it was either too cold or not cold enough to help and it also melted too quickly. These have the perfect amount of padding to be cold but not too cold. It actually decreases my pain. And they stay cold! I went to bed with one of these filled with ice on my head last night and this morning the bag still had some unmelted ice cubes in it. I have 3 of these from a recent hospital stay and have used each of them 4-5 times and they haven't leaked yet. The only downside I've found is that the clamps break easily--they can be reattached but I've lost one part of a couple of the clamps which makes the bags pretty useless. FYI I ordered more from cardinal health directly online for only two dollars per bag for twenty five compared with three per bag if you buy a hundred at a time or five to eight dollars per bag for just one here.

Sometimes they last for dozens of refills, other times only a few. I've decided that sharp ice cubes and overfilling are probably responsible for short longevity. At 5 bucks a crack, I think they're a bit pricey, considering the Chinese origin and cheap materials.

By Northumbrian
I broke my ankle, had surgery, and went home with about 8 of these exact bags. I'm frankly shocked at what they're charging for one of these on here. They're basically paper with a thin plastic lining inside, with a plastic clamp that closes on top. The hospital used 4 of these at a time on me: top, bottom and sides of my ankle. At home, I haven't had one last more than 10 uses before it starts to leak through the bag. In fact, most last around 5 uses. The shape is also not very well thought out, using one at a time I can ice one side and the top of my ankle, leaving enough space in the bag that I can bend it.On the bright side, before they start leaking, no moisture escapes like you might find with ziplock bags, which get so wet they're basically unusable, especially if you're in a splint or cast.
