4Last of the Mid-Level Quality Dress Shoes
By Mebaman
There was a time when plastic soles on dress shoes were unheard of. That time has passed. Now, to get shoes like your father had that could be resoled and refurbished, you have to spend nearly $200 and up on a pair. Most dress shoes in the mid-level consumer/department store price range are cheap affairs, comprised of dubious materials (i.e., leather from really shiny cows) glued together in overseas factories. The Johnston & Murphy Melton is the last refurbishable, Goodyear Welted dress shoe in the sub-$200 price range that's easily found and produced in quantity.Of course, to reach this price point, J&M has cut a few corners. Primarily, the shoe, depending upon the day of the week, is either made in India or Mexico. The pair I have (black) were made in India, and there is a slight chemical smell to the leather sole that is unpleasant at first but seems to go away with time. Meltons (burgundy) made in Mexico observed at a local department store did not seem to have this problem. The Meltons appear large, but fit correctly. The extra length seems to come from an elongated taper of the cap toe, which looks a bit more elegant than the more ubiquitous blunted cap toe I've seen about. The traditional look of the Meltons make them an excellent "interview shoe" (remember, balmorals are more formal than bluchers) At 1/2 the price of the higher quality lookalike Allen Edmonds (Made in the U.S.A.) Park Avenue shoe, the Melton is a serviceable option for those of us who like decent footwear, but cannot justify a $325 pair of shoes. My only regret is that neither J&M nor any other shoemaker offers any additional dress shoe models or styles featuring a goodyear welt at this price point (Florsheim Imperial Kenmoor line is the next closest @ ~$225.00 - and those are still made in India). So, if you're looking for something a bit nicer or differently styled, be prepared for a price jump.

5Great alternative to Allen Edmonds Park Avenue
By K. Elerby
I purchased a pair of these in Black and Bordeaux. It's funny because I was actually looking for a pair of Park Avenue's to add to my collection, but they were on Amazon deals for under $50 bucks each. I'm not new to J&M, but I'm glad I decided to give their lower end Oxford a try because I couldn't pass up a deal to get 2 brand new pair of oxfords for less than it cost to have one of my AE's reconditioned. The Optima (I think that's what they call it) shoe sole is very comfortable, even brand new out of the box. If you've purchased high quality dress shoes before, you know how much a pain it can be to get them "broken in". The factory shine on these are really great. Got a compliment when wearing them from a person who wears Park Avenue's and is extremely anal about his shine.Pros:-Great classic cap toe Oxford-Beautiful shine-Extremely comfortableCons:The bordeaux color isn't noticeably different from the black pair unless under good light. I knew the pictures were a bit indicative of this, but I would really have liked if J&M made a visible difference of the two. I think I could wear both a black and bordeaux and it would take a keen eye to realize that I'm wearing two different colored shoes.*Note*If you're purchasing these and you're new to dress shoes, get your foot measured. The last thing you want to do is buy a shoe that's too narrow or too wide.

3I love my J&M shoes, but the quality is not what it used to be...
By B. Dickson
I have owned Johnston & Murphy shoes in the past, so I was very comfortable with ordering over the internet. These shoes are high quality and will last years. My last pair lasted 5 years with 2 re-soles. My Bostonian shoes are completely worn out after two years. I am disappointed with the J&M Oxfords because the insole has started to lift out of the shoe. Insoles should not lift after wearing the shoes 6 or 7 times, or even 600 times. It is just poor quality workmanship during the glue process. I decided not to send the shoes back, because I really like them a lot. Shoe rating would be a 5 without the insole issue. I will take them to a local shoemaker to have the insoles glued in properly. If there is additional info, I will update this post.Details of why I like these shoes:- leather soles that have a decent life- all leather shoes that wear very well- the quality of the workmanship cut & sew is good- the shoes are perfectly matched, unlike many of the shoes you find today- solid shoe with enough flexibility for a lot of walking
